LOOKS
The 2026 Jetta GLI that I tested featured a sleek and sporty design that complements its drive quality — highlighted by Monterey Blue paint with red striping, and a sharp-looking light bar up front. The power tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof was also a nice feature to have on warm days to let the rays in.
It carries over mostly unchanged after an attractive refresh in 2025. The Jetta GLI features 18-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, LED automatic lighting, power-folding and heated side mirrors with position memory, rain-sensing front wipers, chrome-tipped dual exhaust, and red painted brake calipers.
Moving inside, the GLI version of the Jetta is more upscale and attractive than base models. It features comfortable leather seating, and the red stitching on the seats matches the exterior striping color.
This is a compact sedan, so while there is seating for 5, remember that space will be tight in the back seat for taller passengers. But if we’re being honest, you’ll get the same amount of space in both the Civic Si and the Elantra N. And compact cars never claimed to be the roomiest.
You get a total of 14.1 cubic feet in the trunk, again very similar to the numbers from rival models.
Materials and features used inside the Jetta GLI include:
— Grigio & Titan Black leather interior
— Climatronic Touch dual-zone automatic climate control
— Heated, leather-wrapped GLI sport steering wheel with shift paddles
— Heated and ventilated, power driver’s seat with lumbar support and position memory
— Hated and ventilated front passenger seat
— 60/40 split-folding rear seat with center armrest
— Auto-dimming interior rearview mirror
— Multi-color adjustable ambient lighting
— Stainless steel pedal caps
HOW’S THE RIDE?
The 2026 Volkswagen Jetta GLI comes with a single engine option: A turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that comes paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission (or a 6-speed manual if you prefer).
Total output numbers are 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. These are decent numbers that deliver a fun, sporty drive, with a nice engine growl at times.
Having both manual and automatic transmissions offered may draw in some driving enthusiasts who want to take shifting into their own hands.
It’s true that some rivals in the segment are more powerful and a bit more fun to drive, but they are also more expensive. The Jetta GLI delivers fun on a budget.
The Jetta GLI comes in FWD only, with no AWD option, so I wouldn't recommend using it in winter weather or other poor weather conditions.
The vehicle also features Drive Mode Selection, letting you choose between Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport and Custom modes. It also offers a four-wheel independent sport suspension, plus a limited slip front differential that actively distributes torque to the wheel with the best grip, enhancing traction, reducing understeer, and improving cornering speed.
This performance-focused setup is much more enjoyable as a driver than the base Jetta, which only offers 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.
The 0-to-60 speed on the 2026 Jetta GLI is impressive at under 6 seconds. Some performance rivals are better from a stop, clocking in their 0-to-60 under 5 seconds. On the flip side, the base Jetta engine will take more than 8 seconds to do the same. All in all, the GLI delivers solid numbers.
Beyond off-the-line speed, the Jetta GLI handles impressively and is responsive to driver input. You’ll have fun whipping it around twisty roadways, and it’s a comfortable ride on all road types.
I would highly recommend that Jetta buyers upgrade from the regular Jetta if at all possible.
TECHNOLOGY, SAFETY
The 2026 Jetta GLI features a decent tech setup, but it’s not the best in terms of user-friendly design. Navigating the menus is more complicated than it should be, and the look of the system could be improved.
The system features a 8-inch touchscreen, which is kind of small. The climate controls are below the main screen and use sliders. Overall it’s usable, but not my favorite setup in this segment.
One positive is that voice commands worked well as an alternative to touchscreen commands.
Other tech features include:
— Bluetooth connectivity
— Volkswagen Premium Audio System with eight speakers and a subwoofer
— Satellite radio (3-month trial)
— Wireless smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
— Multiple USB ports
— Qi wireless charging
— Connected Vehicle Services
In terms of safety tech, the Jetta GLI has a strong list of features.
At the center of the safety features on the Jetta GLI is the IQ.Drive system, standard on all trims, which includes:
— Travel Assist (semi-automated driving assistance)
— Adaptive Cruise Control
— Lane Keeping System
— Emergency Assist (semi-automated vehicle assistance for unresponsive driver)
— Forward Collision Warning
— Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring
— Active Blind Spot Monitor
— Rear Traffic Alert
There’s also a full array of airbags, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, LATCH system for child car seats and Tire Pressure Monitoring System.
All of these systems did their job to protect the driver and passengers well, without overreacting.
All that leads up to a 5-star government safety rating, an impressive feat for a smaller vehicle.
MPG
Fuel mileage is a major success that will drive interest in the 2026 Jetta GLI.
Numbers come in at 26 city, 35 highway and 29 combined with the automatic transmission. If you get the manual transmission, numbers are 26/36/30.
During my time in the Jetta GLI, I averaged 31 mpg. And overall, the numbers are quite competitive in the segment.
While the urge will be to have as fun a drive as possible in the Jetta GLI, you can also push things pretty far in terms of time between fill-ups, especially when Eco Mode is used.
PRICE
The 2026 Volkswagen Jetta GLI comes in just one trim level — the Autobahn trim — and is priced around $35K. My test vehicle was priced at $35,670, which is a decent number for a sporty sedan.
The only choice you need to make with the GLI is whether you want an automatic or manual transmission. Compared to rival compact sport sedans from Honda, Hyundai and others, the Jetta GLI is competitively priced, and costs less than most rivals.
Also, it’s worth noting that the non-GLI version of the Jetta starts around $25K, making it one of the most affordable new vehicles available (on a level with the Kia K4, Nissan Sentra, Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla). Trim levels on that version include S, Sport, SE, and SEL. You’ll lose the power and character of the GLI’s drive, but buyers on a budget may be OK with that sacrifice.
Warranties include:
— Four-year/50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty
— Four-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty
— Roadside assistance for three years/36,000 miles
— Two years/20,000 miles of scheduled maintenance covered
BOTTOM LINE
Volkswagen fans who want a small but sporty ride with a manual transmission option have a strong option in the 2026 Jetta GLI.
While this sedan is not quite as fun to drive as some rivals, it still delivers an enjoyable drive quality, and is a major improvement over the base Jetta offering.
Add in an affordable price point and strong fuel mileage, and this vehicle is a bit of a diamond in the rough for people who love to drive.
