Entering the realm of the luxury automobile may seem like a tall task for car buyers, but with brands like Volvo, it’s easier than you may imagine.

Take their subcompact SUV offering, the XC40, for example. Starting around the low $40K price range, it provides a foot in the door for people looking to step up on the class scale — as long as they’re good with limited space in the rear seats and in the cargo hold.

Volvo’s larger XC60 and XC90 SUVs are more spacious, but if you’re less concerned with the amount of space but still want the Volvo quality design, drive quality and safety features, the XC40 is a strong option to consider — and it competes well against other smaller SUV options in the class — including the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLB, Acura ADX and Lincoln Corsair.

Read on for a full review on the 2026 Volvo XC40, which I recently had the opportunity to experience, to learn more about how it holds up vs. its rivals.

LOOKS

The 2026 Volvo XC40 is still in its initial design, and is getting a bit long in the tooth at 8 years old, but surprisingly the look still holds up well.

It features Volvo’s traditional minimalist Swedish styling. Unlike most rivals, it’s not an overly bold design — instead more sleek and classy by nature. It's a luxury of a more understated type.

I loved the wheel design on my test vehicle — special 21-inch 5-Triple Open Spoke Black Diamond Cut alloy wheels to be specific. Wheels can range from 18 to 21 inches depending on configuration.

The XC40 features a panoramic sunroof with power sunshade, pixel headlight technology, roof rails, plus glossy black window trim and mirror caps.

Moving inside, you’ll notice why the XC40 is called a subcompact SUV. There is seating for 5, but the back seat is quite tight and best for shorter folks and children. On the positive side, you’ll be extremely comfortable in the high-quality seating regardless of where you sit.

Up front, you also see Volvo’s high-class touches, such as the unique and attractive Orrefors crystal shifter and the inclusion of wood trim. Front seats are heated and get power lumbar support.

Cargo space is a bit tight compared to rivals, at 20.4 cubic feet with the rear seats up, and 57.5 cubic feet with the rear seats down.

HOW’S THE RIDE?

The 2026 Volvo XC40 offers two engine options, and I tested the more powerful version: A 2.0-liter, turbo, four-cylinder engine delivering 247 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and also includes a mild hybrid system, anti-lock braking, all-wheel drive, and Electronic Stability Control. This engine is referred to as the B5 option.

The base engine, referred to as B4, is also a turbo and comes with front-wheel drive, and a more modest 194 horsepower and 221 pound-feet. It also features a mild-hybrid setup, and is slightly more fuel-efficient.

You’ll notice the difference between the B4 and B5, and I highly recommend choosing the more powerful option. You’ll appreciate the difference in feel and driving experience.

The B5 engine gets moving well, with respectable 0-to-60 times in the mid-6-second range. It’s nimble in traffic due to its smaller size, is never slow, and merges and passes without any issues. Overall, it responds quite well and quickly to driver input. While not a pure rocket, it’s still an overall pleasant and enjoyable driving experience, and the drive is comfortable, smooth and quiet.

Towing isn’t generally a consideration in this class, but the XC40 is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds.

TECHNOLOGY, SAFETY

The 2026 Volvo XC40 centers its tech setup on a vertical, 9-inch touchscreen and a Google-based infotainment setup. The system is mostly easy to use by touch controls, but some of the controls (such as climate) are a bit convoluted and cumbersome to navigate. The good thing is that voice commands work very well, and you can skip using touch controls most of the time. I rarely had to repeat myself and the system understood me clearly.

Just saying “Hey Google” will activate the system and then you can give your commands for phone, radio or navigation controls. You don’t even need to hit a button on the steering wheel. You can even ask the system for the latest updates on the weather, stocks and other topics.

There are multiple USB ports and a 12V power outlet in the XC40, plus Bluetooth connectivity, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless charging pad. Google services included in the system include Maps, Play Store and Assistant.

Audiophiles will love the available 13-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system, and an 8-speaker system is standard.

In terms of safety, Volvo continues to be a leader, and has its bases covered on the XC40. Government safety ratings place it at 5 out of 5 stars, making it among the safest vehicles in its class.

The XC40 comes standard with a Blind Spot Information System with Steer Assist and Cross Traffic Alert, as well as Adaptive Cruise Control. It also has a Collision Avoidance System that detects vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, plus:
— Automatic braking after collision
— Run-off Road Protection & Mitigation
— Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Aid
— Airbags throughout the vehicle
— Whiplash Protection System in front seats

Additional features on the top Ultra trim level included:
— Pilot Assist (limited self-driving system)
— 360-degree camera for parking assistance

MPG

The official fuel mileage numbers on the XC40’s B5 (AWD) engine clock in at 23 city/30 highway/26 combined. The base B4 (FWD) engine offers 25 city/32 highway/27 combined.

With a minimal difference in fuel economy between the two, I would recommend the more powerful B5 engine.

On paper, these fuel-economy numbers are among the best you’ll find in the segment, when compared to key rivals such as the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLB. But in reality, you’re going to be slightly disappointed, as real-world numbers fall a bit short of the official ratings. My average in the XC40 was less than 25 mpg.

PRICE

The 2026 Volvo XC40 that I tested was at the top of the trim levels (an Ultra model) and priced just over $57K; More affordable is the base option, which starts around $41K. Even the lowest trim level is well-equipped, and serves as a lower-cost entry point.

All in all, this price range is on the lower end for luxury vehicles, and is one of the more affordable ways to get into the luxury class of SUVs.

Trim levels offered are Core, Plus and Ultra. Core and Plus can be paired with either engine option, while Ultra sticks to the upgraded B5 engine. But it’s worth the minor price hike to choose the better engine even on the lower trims.

Warranties are solid on the XC40, coming in:

— 4 year/50,000 mile overall limited warranty
— 4 year/50,000 mile powertrain warranty
— Complimentary maintenance for 2 years/20,000 miles
— Volvo Roadside Assistance for 48 months

BOTTOM LINE

The 2026 Volvo XC40 offers a memorable drive, upscale design and plush interior.

It’s among the strongest options for families looking to break into the luxury class without dropping extreme coinage, and worth a test drive for anyone shopping in this segment.
