As vehicle prices continue to skyrocket, and payments reach new highs every year, it’s important to remember that some vehicles are still out there which are more basic and come at a price that won’t cost you a kidney.

One such vehicle is the Hyundai Venue, a subcompact SUV that’s about as affordable as you’ll find today.

I recently tested a 2026 Hyundai Venue SEL model, and I’m back with a full report on what you’ll get from this budget-friendly ride, which competes with other small SUVs such as the Kia Soul, Volkswagen Taos, Chevy Trax and Mazda CX-30.

LOOKS

The 2026 Hyundai Venue has one of the more attractive exterior designs in this class of subcompact SUVs, and my vehicle came in a two-tone design (white paint with a black roof).

The Venue features 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, and heated side mirrors. It’s shorter than most rivals, but still easy to enter and exit.

Moving inside, my test vehicle featured a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, cloth and synthetic leather seating, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, and there is an option for two-tone upholstery and heated seats.

The vehicle seats 5 officially, but the reality is the back seat is tiny. If you regularly have passengers in your back seat, especially full grown ones, I would recommend moving up to a larger vehicle, but the Venue is fine for people who mostly drive alone or with a passenger up front.

Materials used inside the vehicle are not high-end, but that shouldn’t be expected in a vehicle of this price range. They’re adequate for the segment. For a small vehicle, you do get a decent amount of options for small-item storage.

Cargo space comes in at 19 cubic feet with rear seats up, and 32 cubic feet with rear seats down. These numbers are lower than most rivals.

HOW’S THE RIDE?

As one might expect, the weakest aspect of a budget vehicle like this will be the engine performance.

The 2026 Hyundai Venue is powered by a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine, paired with a CVT automatic transmission, and delivering 121 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque.

It’s only available in Front-Wheel Drive, with no All-Wheel Drive option, and features Electronic Stability Control with Traction Control.

The Venue is not a fast vehicle (The 0 to 60 speed is nearly 9 seconds), but on the positive side it does offer a smooth ride and it’s quite nimble due to its compact size.

I also found the engine to be a bit noisy at higher speed, such as when you’re on the highway. And the lack of power will make passing more difficult on the freeway.

This vehicle is sized perfectly for people who will be driving mostly in the city and wanting to fit into tight parking locations. It’s also a solid option for commuters who want a low-cost vehicle with high fuel mileage and aren’t concerned about power and performance.

TECHNOLOGY, SAFETY

As a budget vehicle, the tech setup in the 2026 Hyundai Venue is pretty basic.

You get a small 8-inch touchscreen which is easy to use, some simple physical climate and radio dials, and a six-speaker sound system. You also get Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, a wireless phone charger, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

For safety features, you get a rearview camera, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. And you can add features such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

MPG

The official fuel mileage numbers on the 2026 Hyundai Venue are 29 city/33 highway/31 combined. These numbers are strong when compared to rivals such as the Kia Soul, Nissan Kicks and Chevy Trax.

These strong numbers will also increase your savings long-term, as they will allow for longer gaps between trips to the gas station.

PRICE

The low price is arguably the best selling-point for the 2026 Hyundai Venue.

My test vehicle was priced around $24K, and the base price starts around $22K, which is among the lowest prices you’ll find on any new vehicle available today.

The two trim levels are SE and SEL, and it’s worth the modest bump up to get the SEL, which adds features like heated front seats, keyless entry and blind-spot monitoring.

You also get Hyundai’s industry-leading warranties with the Venue, including:
— 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty
— 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage
— 5 years of roadside assistance
— 3 years/36,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance

At the end of the day, it’s hard to beat the Venue in terms of value.

BOTTOM LINE

The 2026 Hyundai Venue is one of the few low-cost new vehicles remaining. But that comes with some sacrifices in power and lack of space.

It’s ultimately a great vehicle option for city drivers, commuters or solo drivers without a family to carry to get into a new SUV at a lower price.
